Correct Waste Classification Can Save Money
Challenge
Trade Skips were approached by a client who provides design and construction services to the water industry worldwide and asked to solve a waste problem they had. The client was not happy with the price they were paying to dispose of the Media waste they were removing from the gravity filters used on a large number of water treatment sites nationwide. The waste was being classified and removed as hazardous waste by the previous broker due to some traces of hazardous metal showing up on an analysis of the waste. Given the volume of this waste this was costing the client a fortune!
Solution
Given the environment of which the waste derived Trade Skips suspected that the presence of the hazardous metal was in fact an anomaly. We then proceeded to appoint an independent analysis company to test the waste, this time testing multiple samples of the waste in order to correct any anomalies and gain a more accurate representation of the waste. The result showed that the metals were an irregularity and that the waste was in fact non hazardous, a great result for the client!
However the waste that was classified was still quite a unique one and many landfill sites did not have the necessary licenses to receive the waste. Using our extensive network we found the perfect carriers and tipping sites with all the necessary permits and licenses to ensure our clients duty of care was fulfilled.
Results
Just on one site alone we saved our client an impressive £192,000, the new cost of disposal and testing was just 25% of the original cost to dispose with the previous broker. It goes to show that with just a small investment in the correct analysis and identification of the waste huge savings can potentially be made.
Not only did we save our client money we also ensured they were completely compliant at every stage from handling to disposal.
